London Director Nathan Hazelwood began his construction career as a subcontractor in the mid 2000’s, working on various large projects such as the Olympics, airports, wind farms etc.

Whilst working on site at one of the many projects Nathan covered, he began to make placements on his lunchbreaks and after work which is where his construction recruitment career started.

‘I made a few placements whilst on site, just on my lunchbreak and in the evenings and concluded this isn’t an opportunity I can pass. I took 3 months off and approached some recruitment businesses within construction’.

‘I genuinely have an interest in construction, especially civil engineering and infrastructure sectors at the time. I approached a few businesses deliberately that didn’t have civil engineering or rail teams and then approached them for a job.’

Nathan received three job offers and selected Daniel Owen Associates for his first venture in construction recruitment, quickly winning ‘Trainee of the Year’ and then ‘Consultant of the Year’ two years in a row.

Having built up a portfolio of his work, Nathan felt that he needed a new opportunity in helping him develop and was approached by PSR which is where his journey at the company was triggered.

‘These guys [PSR] approached me and the offers I had on the table made it a no brainer to come here and since I’ve been here it’s just gone from strength to strength’.

‘The main reason for coming here was there was going to be a lot more accountability and ownership with regards to how you structure the team and how you grow the team’.

When asked about the most challenging aspect of the construction industry currently, Nathan replied:

‘There’s a bit of tentative nature to the industry around Brexit, but we’ve tried to counter act that. We’ve tried to diversify by moving into and winning more work on the government funded work rather than private.’

He also spoke about the challenges the office faces in the next couple of years:

‘The challenge for the office is not attracting but highlighting the correct staff for our business because of the way we operate.’

The growth of the London office has provided Nathan and his team with a whole host of work available in the south of the UK and he is hopeful of another southern office opening soon.

‘It would be great to have another office in south, to expand our client pool. In terms of the next two years in London, it’s got to be 35+ staff, as in Billing Consultants’.

The final word for Nathan expressed how he would like PSR as a company to be well-recognised across all sectors they operate within.
