Your first thought about taking on a temporary contract might be that it doesn’t fit into your overall career plan. However, read on to find out how it could be the best move for your career.

The construction industry is often flexible by its very nature in that many jobs within it span a project with a finite timeframe. This flexibility can be advantageous for many workers by offering temporary contracts.

The recent recession has seen a level of caution being exercised by many construction firms and this has resulted in a greater number of temporary contracts being made available. A temporary contract can typically be anything from 6 to 36 months and anything in between, with certain roles such as Construction Manager being employed for the whole duration of the project and Engineers and Surveyors being enlisted for a short term contracts.

Taking on temporary contracts is a great way to gain invaluable insight into a wide range of construction jobs and different areas of the business. Often being afforded the opportunity to work overseas or closer to home on Government infrastructure projects for example, a temporary contract can dramatically add depth and variety to your CV.

If you sign up for a temporary contract, to get the most from the role, ensure that you bring as much value to the company as you can, be proactive and aim to make yourself indispensable. Add a good working relationship with your manager and the firm that you are assigned to, and you could well be first in line for a permanent role should one become available. Grab every opportunity that is offered to you, ask your manager questions to learn as much about the project as possible and to find out if there is future scope for a career with them. By taking on a number of temporary contracts you’ll soon be able to see where your strengths lie and potentially in which area you would like to specialise.

Since the implementation of the Agency Workers Regulations 2010, temporary workers are in a much more favourable position in terms of benefits than they were previously. Taking on a temporary contract now means that you will (after 12 continuous weeks of employment) be entitled to sick pay, holiday pay and pension benefits just the same as those employed on a permanent basis. You’ll also be entitled to continue your CPD training.

If you’re looking for a rewarding role in the construction industry then it is worth remembering that construction companies view temporary contracts as an essential element of their recruitment strategy. So, whether you are between jobs, travelling, returning to work after a career break or want to significantly increase your level of experience then we’d always recommend registering for temporary works roles.
