PSR Solutions' candidate success on Midland Metro project

09 Nov 2015

Candidate Profile: Lewis Clarke

Lewis Clarke was placed by PSR Solutions’ Client Relationship Director, David Berks over two years ago and has recently been working on Balfour Beatty’s Midland Metro project. Lewis is a Quantity Surveyor, involved in all commercial aspects including subcontract management, commercial reporting and cost reconciliation, variation and change management and forecasting.

The project

The Midland Metro project will carry 3.5 million passengers a year, produce 1,300 jobs and boost the West Midlands economy by more than £50 million per annum, all having a fantastic effect on future generations in the area. It will be the first time Birmingham City will have seen a tram since 1953 which will have a monumental impact on the way that people travel in and around the city.

We asked Lewis how it feels to be part of such a prestigious project, he commented:

‘’As Birmingham is going through a construction and population boom it is important there is infrastructure investment. The new tram system will enable people to easily get around Birmingham like people once did in the early 1900s. The tram network was the main mode of travel and reintroducing this sustainable method of transport can only have positive outcomes in Birmingham.’’

The PSR Solutions experience

Lewis is a prime example of the candidates we work with and PSR Solutions takes great pride in giving individuals the opportunity to broaden their horizons and excel in their career. When asked about the level of service that he was provided, Lewis was more than happy to give us his feedback;

“PSR provide a friendly and reliable service where your needs are the biggest priority. Meeting up with a consultant face to face fills you with confidence that you are not wasting your time and that your interests are of the upmost importance. Before choosing my current role, PSR provided me with several opportunities which I interviewed for. Having more than one option to choose from helped me weigh up the pros and cons of different companies, enabling me to make my own choice. I was shown the various options I had and was walked through the potential projects I could work on in line with my personal aspirations’’

Opportunities

Through Lewis’ collaboration with PSR Solutions and his strong will to move forward in his career, he has been able to gain valuable work experience on this project. When asked if he would like to work on similar projects in the future. He explained that he ‘’would enjoy being involved with the Tram extension that will continue from New Street Station to outside the Birmingham Town Hall. In addition, involvement within HS2 is a passion of mine and I would love to contribute in making a national change’’.

Lewis has set his sights on becoming a Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager in the future and with the current skills shortage we have in the UK, work experience on projects such as this one can make a world of difference. Lewis has to been able to further develop his skills that will be essential in his future ambitions.

‘’I believe PSR can provide good advice and opportunities that will help me achieve my career goals’’.

Aftercare

PSR Solutions transparently endeavours to play an on-going role in making sure that each candidate is happy in their position, as seen in our in-depth testimonial with Ian Hill, Regional Commercial Manager at Interserve Engineering Services, when referring to our Aftercare division that solely exists to look after all those that do business with us.

‘’PSR sourced my current role 19 months ago and since then I have been regularly visited or phoned at my discretion to check how I have been getting on and if I have had any issues then provided advice on how to deal with them with mine and the business’ best interests in mind’’.

Although Lewis has had limited exposure to other agencies, he commented that he has:

‘’not come across another that is as friendly, helpful and caring as PSR. I would not look to use another agency if I felt the need to move from my current role’’.

Always moving forward

As a business and a closely knitted team, we are always looking to move forward and explore new avenues that can lead us to further success. We asked Lewis if there was anything else that he might like to see from us. He recommended that we ‘’could possibly look into getting involved with graduate schemes offered by larger companies. Young people struggle to find the right job due to their limited experience within the working world. Attending University Graduate Fares looking for the right candidates for large companies could be beneficial to all parties involved’’. This is something that we will proudly look into to enable us to source the very best candidates for our clients with the intention of reducing the skills shortage in the industry by nurturing the next generation of construction professionals.
