The Company

Our client is a leading provider of services and plant within the UK railway industry. Working with a number of the leading names and clients within the industry, they have built an enviable reputation of supplying safe, secure and reliable services to this expanding market.

The Role

To develop and manage the pre and post contract phases, assist the management of future tender activity, contractual risk and contract cost. The role is of particular importance to support the growth within the existing business and to control cost and optimise contract revenue in a difficult business climate.

Business reporting
  • Compile weekly win work tracker
  • Compile monthly work won tracker KPI
  • Produce monthly Commercial Report for head office
  • Send and manage contractual insurance conditions to head office/insurance broker for assessment at bid stage.
  • Produce contract report each period/month for each of the work streams showing actual cost versus target cost and identify reasons for any discrepancies and action to close them out.


Marketing/Bidding
  • Produce a profile map of the external market competitors and customers including external price benchmarking and key contact list of customer staff and their interests for all business streams.
  • Production of bid pricing models for all future work
  • Carry out risk review sessions for proposed new work
  • Carry out risk review sessions for existing contracts
  • Compile responses to OJEU publications, supplier accreditation's and requests for tender.
  • Negotiating and writing contracts through a good understanding of customer needs and commercial risks, including haulage, labour supply, track access and port/terminal access.
  • Produce VOs for existing contracts.
  • Identify future bidding opportunities for growth in line with the strategic plan.


Post contract
  • Establish and maintain rigorous cost controls including early warning systems
  • Deliver contractually agreed cash flow
  • Build client relationships and promote effective ways of working with the project and with the client
  • Negotiate and agree contractual disputes and final accounts
  • Lead and resolve low value claims (up to £300k) that arise delivery of the contracts.


The Person

A proactive forward thinking person with a wide range of experiences within the rail or similar industry. Engineering/Commercial background with the ability to see both the strategic view of situations whilst able to drill down into the detail as required. Confidence to liaise effectively with the business delivery teams to understand the project requirements. Prepared to challenge convention and deliver change. Understanding of the cost of doing business, risk profiles of contracts and the ability to protect company interests.

  • Knowledge and negotiation of railway contracts or similar.
  • Experience of commercial management on multidisciplinary projects
  • Proven experience of team leadership and proactive management
  • Understanding of rail disciplines and interface management
  • Understanding and ability to produce accurate contract cost models
