How does a highways and infrastructure company adopt and influence the latest technologies and vendors without disengaging the end user ?

My Client are establishing a new function utilising a DevOps model to provide an outlet for our business ambitions and requirements to innovate with new technology and produce products internally at pace. The team will be responsible for :-
  • Idea Creation - This can be via various methods i.e. crowd sourcing and innovation workshops
  • Experimentation - Co-creating with existing software and hardware to provide new and innovative approaches to business problems. Creating new partnerships with vendors to try new approaches.
  • Production - Where suitable, hands on developers will provide agile and speedier delivery.

The team's focus is on providing a hands on approach to technology with the end users and for them to feel like the "Architect" of the design. This role will provide development and support for the end users whilst looking to push the boundaries to ultimate create greater value. We are adopting an approach where we "start small, think big but fail fast/forward" to allow us to try and experiment with new technologies.

This team will pioneer in bleeding edge development practices in a highly agile, startup-like environment. You will be part of a highly motivated team with a casual and creative working style.My Client are looking for a junior developer to work closely with both the innovations team and also with the technical services department to identify potential improvement to efficiency to the site survey and back office workflow.

As the Junior Developer, you will be part of a dynamic team working together with the latest tools to help deploy, monitor and test across our multiple innovative products. You will be working under the guidance of the lead developer and GIS Manager to help us align to our IT strategy and future technology roadmaps.

The ideal candidate will have recent experience of developing and specifically worked with spatial data sets and relational databases

Key Accountabilities
  • Junior Developer for new products from existing application integration to new innovative apps.
  • Work closely with the Technical Services team to understand and help improve workflows
  • Assist Technical Services team with database management and bug fixing
  • Flexibility to travel as role requires including networking with latest technology
  • Promoting a positive safety culture through visible proactive, consistent and influential behaviours
  • Keep the company safe by co-operating with others to ensure a coordinated approach to promote a clear understanding of each party's duties, roles and responsibilities for Safety and Wellbeing
  • Report all incident, near misses, hazards, taking action as necessary to control hazard as appropriate
  • Align with of a culture of continuous delivery and improvement, ensuring that key systems are regularly analysed, maintained and improved.

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How
  • Knowledge of developing products in a DevOps team (continuous integration, automated deployment, testing and the relevant tooling)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Awareness of latest development thinking and practices including SRE and Serverless Cloud.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies (TDD, SCRUM, Kanban, etc.)
  • Fundamentals of software engineering and application architecture including application programming, security, operations, networking and API design and management.
  • Understanding of managing and deploying on Cloud based platforms i.e. Azure, AWS and GCP.
  • Experience using software development languages and toolsets - including Python, .NET (C#), SQL, and Xamarin
  • Knowledge of manipulating spatial datasets preferably with ESRI ArcGIS products
  • Knowledge of GPS /GNSS data collection techniques
  • Experience with the use of version control systems such as subversion or git.
  • Ability to quickly research and learn new programming tools and techniques
