Job description

My client is a leading international materials development and commercialisation organisation. They have offices and laboratories in the US, UK and the Far East, and provide materials and assurance expertise to clients in a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, construction, ceramics, additive manufacturing, energy and power engineering.

My client is looking for someone to be the primary technical expert for the Structures Testing laboratory - ensuring that work is properly scoped and delivered to meet our clients' quality, cost and time requirements.

The Technical Manager of the Structures department will be a key member of the Structures Testing leadership team, with a deep academic understanding of the relevant testing regimes, combined with a good knowledge of the construction sector and the regulatory requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • The Technical Manager will provide overall technical leadership to the Structures Testing laboratory
  • Act as the primary reference point for complex tests, advising the Project Management and Set-Up teams and liaising with the commercial team as required
  • Work in partnership with the commercial team to develop quotes for complex work
  • Define the work programs for larger scale customised projects
  • Review the work that has been won, ensuring that the work has been correctly scoped and the appropriate resources assigned
  • Work with the Laboratory Manager to appropriately prioritise work ensuring that work is assigned to suitably qualified staff
  • Review and approve scope changes for complex work
  • Engage with clients to develop their confidence in our capabilities and help to grow overall revenues for the Structures business
  • Provide technical input to and sign-off for reports
  • As part of the Structures Leadership Team, ensure that all work is delivered safely, and meeting our quality and regulatory requirements

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree level in Structural or Civil Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering with significant experience in the construction industry), or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years' experience in the Construction industry, ideally with some experience of a Structural Testing environment
  • Knowledge of the relevant regulatory requirements, particularly the European and National Standards
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills with ability to influence at all levels of seniority
  • Good ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to work in a "one team" manner to resolve any challenges that arise internally or externally
