Front line afghanistan to front line recruitment

For as long as I can remember I have always been keen to see how far I can push myself. Most people never get the opportunity to test themselves to their absolute limit, so I have been lucky in that I was accepted into the Royal Marine Commandos in December 2009 after successfully completing all of the preliminary courses followed by a gruelling 32-week training programme which I passed July 2010 ready for duty. 47 potential Marines out of 60 failed the course so I was chuffed to make the grade.

Having had the opportunity to serve around the globe, including a front line operational tour of Afghanistan in 2012 (Herrick 17), being a Royal Marine Commando had taught me courage, determination, unselfishness, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity (Corps Values).

It may not seem like an obvious transition to some, however the benefits that former service personnel can offer a civilian organisation are endless. Royal Marines are skilled in planning, organising, teamwork, communication, man-management and leadership to name a few.

I decided to make the transition to ‘Civvy Street’ after 6 years in the Marines and implement my transferable skills in the results-driven recruitment industry.

As you can imagine, the transition wasn’t easy and jumping into the unknown was quite daunting but something I had certainly faced before, so I stuck to my guns and pushed on.

Two years later, I have been an active member of the PSR construction recruitment team, bagging the title of top perm biller for the Midlands last year as well as receiving two promotions in that time!

If someone considering leaving the military was to seek my advice about whether or not to go for it, I’d have to say to them to be confident in the highly valuable skillset that you are able to offer a civilian organisation and that it could very well be the best career choice you could make.
