There’s oodles of advice out there that will tell you to steer well clear of the dirty subject of money during a job interview.

But is it really that taboo? Isn’t it often one of the main drivers for going for a new job?

PSR Solutions have been steering candidates to interview success since way back in 2005 and we say, with the right approach, discussing salary at an interview can be done the right way.
So just how do you discuss salary at interview? To avoid the risk of appearing like a money-grabbing plutomaniac, it is best to avoid bringing up the subject of salary at your first interview. Instead, focus on your past achievements, skill set and reasons for applying for the new job (and not that it pays more money).

It is unlikely that an employer will raise the issue of salary in the early part of the interview but they may ask you towards the close what your salary expectations are. If this happens, a polite response could go like this:

“Once i fully understand the scope of the role and if I am lucky enough to get through to the next round I’ll have a better idea.”

Mary Ellen Slayter, career expert at Monster.com, believes it can be beneficial to bring up the subject of salary sooner rather than later. Once you feel that the company may be a good fit for you, and vice-versa, then if asked about salary expectations, giving yourself some negotiation space by asking what the salary range is for the role is a good idea. That way, you’ll be able to ascertain the top bracket the employer may offer, saving you the time of going for a second interview if this isn’t within your expectations and also allowing you to specify the higher end of the salary bracket at any subsequent interview.
