A city on the rise: Why you should choose Manchester.

It’s really exciting to see so much development in Greater Manchester and with the pace increasing over the last few years, the city has seen extensive changes and this trend is set to continue over the next 5 years. 

Manchester is visibly booming. You only need to sit on the tram and look out of the window to see the tower cranes cluster across the skyline and the concrete lift shafts of future towers, perched on every corner, overlooking this remarkable city.

Some of the key projects to watch out for over the next couple of years include;

FOOTBALLER, GARY NEVILLE’S £200M MIXED-USE TOWER IN MANCHESTER KNOWN AS ST MICHAEL’S, 

It’s been a tough battle getting this one off the ground but it’s finally been given the go ahead. The scheme will include a 40-storey tower containing a five-star hotel of 191 bedrooms and a further 181 high-end apartments. 

THE NEW TOWNHALL

The main phase of the £330m refurbishment and upgrade of the grade one-listed town hall includes; full restoration of parts of the Alfred Waterhouse-designed building including the Great Hall, and refurbishment and reparation of the building’s external fabric, windows and roof. Accessibility improvements are also planned, together with the creation of a visitor centre within the town hall.

CIRCLE SQUARE

Creating a fresh and vibrant new neighbourhood in Manchester, the Circle Square project is set to give the city a complete overhaul of what was a site once used by the BBC. The scheme will see 1,700 new houses, as well as two hotels and a multi-story car park with its primary use being for customers visiting the 100,000 sq ft commercial space which is set to feature shops, studios, bars and restaurants. The total cost of the project is estimated at £750 million and will see a peak workforce of 1,300 on the project by 2021, with over two thirds of the project expected to have been delivered by 2020.

MEADOWSIDE

MeadowSide spearheads the Northern Gateway, an investment partnership between FEC and Manchester City Council to deliver over 15,000 new homes across the north side of central Manchester over the next decade. Northern Gateway is forecast to generate more than £1bn of investment by unlocking the development potential of more than 300 acres or 13m sq ft of land from north of Victoria station through to New Cross, the Lower Irk Valley and Collyhurst.

ST JOHNS

The ambitious £1bn high-rise St John’s scheme - the new-build element of the 6 acre St John’s masterplan – a landmark 52-storey tower of private flats and the Globe & Simpson work space building located next to it. The slender residential block, designed by SimpsonHaugh & Partners, will also contain a Nadler Hotel, and restaurant. Lendlease will also later build two further towers, the 36-storey Nickel and Dime buildings. Designed by Denton Corker Marshall, these include 610 apartments. Once built, the St John’s neighbourhood will include 3,000 homes, 600,000 sq ft of commercial space and a mix of cultural venues.

GRANADA STUDIOS

The existing Granada House building will be converted into a larger hotel than first envisaged with 210 beds and a roof-top bar. Under the revised plans an eight-storey office will become a new 10 storey mixed-use building, to replace the existing 4 storey Annexe building following demolition. This will comprise retail uses at ground and basement level, offices on the lower four floors and residential uses at floor 5-9, with a private roof terrace and swimming pool for residents. The 02, 06, 08 and 12 studios will be retained and refurbished to provide a suite of multi-functional filming, production and studio facilities.  In front of the refurbished studios a new low level modular complex will be built.
