As a student in year 10, I’ve done my year 10 work experience and like many of you I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I’m older and that’s okay this is what work experience is for. Don’t think of it as something your teachers are making you do or a week off school but see it as an opportunity learn your interests and how it benefits your future.

Benefits of work experience

You will get a better idea on work environment and what employers expect of their workers. Aswell as an opportunity to learn about possible career options. A possibility to learn new skills and gain practical experience in a real-life environment. Furthermore, increased self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence. You will be building relationships with professionals in their area of interest, which can be valuable for job searching and career development.

Should you be worried if you don’t know what to do after school?

It can be seen as there a lot of pressure for young people to just know what they want to do in life however you should not worry about not knowing because how are you supposed to know if you’ve not actually experience anything. My advice is to go with what you enjoy most in school and trial a few different things and if you find a passion for it great if not that’s still good just try different things until you do love it. Never do a job you don’t like; you spend a good amount of your life doing it and you will just be miserable. This is why work experience is so good because it gives you that opportunity to learn what your interests are.

My work experience

At PSR I explored different areas of the business learning all the behind the scenes of how those in construction get recruited into jobs. On the first day I made mental health posters with office administrators and in the afternoon, I learnt about marketing and made job cards. Throughout the week I did systems overview, a day in recruitment (trades), credit control and payroll. This made me realise that I much preferred marketing because of the more creative side of things rather than the finance part with loads of numbers which to me personally didn’t make too much sense which obviously isn’t the case for everyone as people have different interests. This has helped me learn what I enjoy most and maybe I could do something in marketing when I’m older.

My key takeaways from work experience?

Going into work experience I was clueless, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I’m older, I didn’t know much at all about the work life outside of school but throughout my week at PSR solutions I have gained a better understand of what makes work experience for year 10s so beneficial and know sort of the area of I would like to go into in the future. So, my advice for all of you new year 10s going into work experience stressing is to relax and do it and listen to what the people there have to say because it will really help your future.
